Teacher hiring runs on a matrix and a mystery. The matrix is mechanical: which subjects, which grades, certified where, available when. The mystery is whether this person can hold a room of twenty-eight kids on a wet Wednesday. A good application form solves the matrix completely and gets one honest glimpse of the mystery.

Why these fields. Subjects and grade levels as paired multi-selects are the matrix — schools staff against a grid of openings, and a candidate certified for middle-school science plus high-school math is a different asset than either alone. The certification field asks for state and number with a note that shortlisted candidates get verified; stating the verification up front keeps the field accurate without demanding document uploads from everyone. Years in the classroom includes "student teaching only" as a first-class answer because new-teacher pipelines matter and pretending otherwise just pushes new grads to lie. Page two is the mystery page. The philosophy question is deliberately rephrased — what does a visitor see on a normal Tuesday? — because every candidate has a polished philosophy statement, and the Tuesday framing forces concrete practice: what's on the walls, who is talking, what happens when a kid is lost. References are constrained to school leadership rather than colleagues, since principals answer a different question than friends do.

What we left out. Transcripts and certification documents — official copies flow through HR channels at offer stage. Demo-lesson scheduling — that belongs after screening, as the ending explains. Salary questions — banded by scale at most schools and negotiated at offer everywhere else.

Who uses this. Private and charter schools hiring off the district cycle, international schools recruiting across borders, tutoring centers scaling from two rooms to six, and districts collecting mid-year replacement pools.

Make it yours. Trim the subject list to your actual openings — a form that lists subjects you aren't hiring for collects applications you'll feel bad declining. In the Logic panel, add follow-ups per subject or grade: a coaching-interest question for PE candidates, a lab-safety certification for sciences. The committee can review straight from the dashboard or a CSV export with one candidate per row; the philosophy answers read surprisingly well in a column. Set a close date aligned to your term calendar.

The Tuesday question earns its keep. Schools that adopt this phrasing report the same thing: weaker candidates paste their essay anyway, strong candidates light up and describe a real morning. The question sorts before you've met anyone.
