Freelancers cannot bill discovery the way agencies do, which makes every unscoped enquiry a small unpaid project. This brief form is the countermeasure: seven questions a prospective client can answer in five minutes that replace the first call — or make it worth having.
Scope in the client's own words. The describe-it field is deliberately informal ("a few sentences", bullet points welcome) because intimidating forms produce either nothing or corporate mush. What arrives in plain speech is remarkably scopeable: you learn the deliverable, the context, and — between the lines — how the client communicates, which is data you will live with for the whole engagement. The reference link does heavy lifting for visual and technical work alike; an existing site, doc, or folder often answers ten questions at once.
The bracket with an escape hatch. Budget brackets work because they cost the client nothing to answer honestly — but the fifth option, "tell me what it takes", matters most. Some excellent clients genuinely do not know what work costs, and forcing them into a low bracket mislabels them as cheap. The escape hatch separates can't-pay from doesn't-know-yet, and your proposal treats those very differently.
Decision maker, detected early. "Are you the final decision maker?" is the freelancer's most protective question. Shared decisions mean building consensus into the timeline; gathering-quotes means you are pricing for a comparison table, which changes how much strategy to give away in the proposal. None of these are bad news — they are pricing information, arriving before the price.
Deliberately thin. No phone number (async by default), no company-size demographics, no how-did-you-hear attribution — a solo operator's brief must feel lighter than an agency's intake or it undercuts the whole positioning. Even the deadline is phrased as "truly need" to preempt the reflexive ASAP.
Where it lives. In the email signature, the portfolio contact button, the freelance-platform profile, and the reply to every "are you available?" DM. When you are fully booked, flip on a close date with a message naming your next opening — scarcity communicated by the form itself, not by silence.
Bending it. Rewrite the work-type options for your discipline, and set the brackets so the lowest is your minimum engagement. Add a file upload if your trade runs on source documents. Notifications on, always — a same-hour reply to a brief is the cheapest conversion boost in freelancing, and the responses view keeps the pipeline queue honest when several arrive in one week.
